FAQs and More Information

Q:   How is Commercial General Liability (CGL) rated?
A:
Rates are based on the amount of risk. The bigger the risk the larger the premium to insure it.  To do a quote for CGL we first must know what type of work you will be doing.  Whether it is Remodeling, Roofing, Plumbing etc.  This determines your classification.  Next we need to know how big your company is.  This determines the risk to the insurance company insuring you.  Each insurance company uses one of three methods to determine your rate.  Annual Gross Sales (including labor & materials), or Annual Field Payroll, or Number of part time and full time employees.

Q:   How soon can I have my business insured?
A:
We can usually provide a quote, collect signatures and payment and bind coverage within a couple of hours.  Our insurance companies honor our requested effective date and follow up with a policy number within one to two days.

Q:   How is Workers' Comp rated?
A:
Workers comp rates are based on what type of work your employees are doing and how much you pay them to do it.  In construction this becomes a little complicated as each job type has its own classification code and those classifications are split based on the hourly wage you pay your emploee.  Workers' comp is not based on number of employees and we don't need to know who you hire.  To quote your workers' comp premium we need your employees job descriptions, hourly pay rate and estimated annual payroll for each job classification.

Q:   How soon can I have my employees insured?
A:
Depending on the type of work they are doing we can bind coverage and have a policy number the same day.  With harder to place risks a week to ten days is the average quote time.

Q:   CERTIFICATES: How soon can I get one and how much do they cost?
A:
The short answer is: It depends.  We can issue a certificate as soon as the insurance company binds your coverage and issues a policy number, usually within one or two business days.  Certficate requests are given priority in our office and can be faxed back to you or directly to your customer within the hour.  We do not charge any additional fees to issue a certificate.

Q:   What is an Additional Insured?
A:
Many of your customers will ask to be named additional insured on your policy.  When you list someone as an additional insured, that endorsement provides coverage for that entity or individual under your policy if they are sued because of your negligence.  In addition they will be notified of any cancellation of your policy.  This is a change to your policy and must be approved by your insurance company.  This approval can sometimes take as long as a week so try to submit your request before the job starts.  Some companies charge additional premium for this.  Ask your agent for details.
